Amphora, Dressel 20 amphora
Top of a globular amphora (form Dressel 20) in buff fabric. Found in the early 20th century on the site of the old Post Office building in St Martin's-le-Grand.
This type of amphora was used to export olive oil from Baetica, a Roman province in what is now southern Spain. It was made in one of the many potters' workshops in the Guadalquivir vally, the centre of the olive oil trade.
The rim has had 'IIII' (4) and 'IIV' (7 wirtten backwards, or opssibly 3) scratched on opposite sides before firing, which may identify the workshop in which it was made, the producer or exporter of the olive oil, or the capacity of the vessel.
