Lamp, picture lamp
This Roman picture lamp was made by a potter using a mould, which allowed them to be mass produced. It is hollow and would have been filled with oil, wax or animal fat. The small hole in the top is an air-hole, and the larger opening was where the wick was placed - the black staining is burning. These lamps were used both indoors and outside, and their shape allowed them to be easily carried about. This lamp is decorated with the picture of a horse, with a saddle and bridle - a popular animal on these type of lamps.
