Coin copy, radiate
A copper alloy contemporary copy of a Roman radiate coin (barbarous radiate), possibly of Tetricus II. In AD 273, Tetricus II was elevated to the position of Caesar (Crown Prince) by his father, Tetricus I, ruler of the Romano-Gallic Empire, AD 271-274. The back of the coin depicts Sol, the Roman sun god. This coin was made c. AD 275-285.
Obv: Radiate head, facing right. Obv inscription: ...VS PF AVG... . Rev: Sol, standing left, holding a whip in his left hand. Rev inscription: ARIE... AG. Part of a hoard from Newgate Street, City of London.
