Coin copy, radiate
A copper alloy contemporary copy of a Roman radiate coin (barbarous radiate) of Tetricus II. In AD 273, Tetricus II was elevated to the position of Caesar (Crown Prince) by his father, Tetricus I, ruler of the Romano-Gallic Empire, AD 271-274. The back of the coin depicts Victory, the Roman goddess of victory. This coin was made c. AD 275-285.
Obv: Radiate bust of Tetricus II, facing right. Obv inscription: ...ICIVS CAES... . Rev: Victory, advancing left, holding a wreath in her raised right hand and a palm in the left. Rev inscription: Illegible. Part of a hoard from Newgate Street, City of London.
