Coin copy, radiate
A copper alloy contemporary copy of a Roman radiate coin (barbarous radiate) of Tetricus II. In AD 273, Tetricus II was elevated to the position of Caesar (Crown Prince) by his father, Tetricus I, ruler of the Romano-Gallic Empire, AD 271-274. The back of the coin possibly depicts Spes, the female personification of hope. This coin was made c. AD 275-285.
Obv: Radiate head of Tetricus II, facing right. Obv inscription: C PIV ESV TET... VS CASA. Rev: Spes? advancing left. Rev inscription: ...AVGG. Part of a hoard from Newgate Street, City of London, 151.
