Coin copy, radiate
A copper alloy contemporary copy of a Roman radiate coin (barbarous radiate) possibly of Tetricus II. In AD 273, Tetricus II was elevated to the position of Caesar (Crown Prince) by his father, Tetricus I, ruler of the Romano-Gallic Empire, AD 271-274. The back of the coin depicts Pax, the Roman goddess of peace. This coin was made c. AD 275-285.
Obv: Draped, radiate bust, facing right. Obv inscription: ...ICAVG. Rev: Pax, standing left, raising her right hand and holding a vertical sceptre in the left. Rev inscription: IX...A... . Part of a hoard from Lime Street, City of London, 1952.
