Coin, nummus AE4
A copper alloy nummus of Emperor Valens, ruler of the Eastern Roman Empire, AD 364-378. The back of the coin depicts Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory. This coin was minted in Lugdunum (modern day Lyon, France), AD 364-378
Obv: Diademed bust of Valens, facing right. Obv inscription: [DN VAL]EN[S P F AVG]. Rev: Victory, standing left, holding a wreath in her right hand and a palm in the left. Rev inscription: [SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE], OF IŮ in field, [LVGP] in exergue.
Found scattered in a stokehole of a small hypocaust in the east wing of Billingsgate Bath House, Lower Thames Street, London EC3 [City of London].
