Coin, nummus AE1
A copper alloy nummus of Galerius. Galerius was named as Caesar (Crown Prince) by Emperor Diocletian in AD 293. Diocletian abdicated in AD 305 making way for Galerius to become emperor of the Eastern Empire, AD 305-311. The back of the coin depicts the personficiation of Africa. This coin was minted in Carthage (near modern day Tunis, Tunisia), AD 298.
Obv: Laureate head of Galerius, facing right. Obv inscription: MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES. Rev: Africa, standing front, head left, wearing an elephant skin head-dress, holding a military standard in his right hand and a tusk in the left, at his feet is a lion with a captured bull. Rev inscription: FELIX ADVENT AVGG NN, I in field (left), PKΔ in exergue.
