Coin, denarius
A base silver denarius coin of Julia Soaemias, the niece of Emperor Septimius Severus (AD 193-211) and mother of Emperor Elagabalus (AD 218-222). She ruled the Roman Empire during the minority of Elagabalus' rule. The back of the coin depicts Venus, the Roman goddess of love. This coin was minted in Rome, Italy, AD 218-222.
Obv: Draped, bare-headed bust of Julia Soaemias, facing right. Obv inscription: IVLIA SOAEMIAS AVG. Rev: Venus, diademed, seated left, holding an apple and sceptre, a child is standing by her feet. Rev inscription: VENVS CAELESTIS. This coin may be part of a hoard from Lime Street, City of London.
