Coin, sestertius
A copper alloy sestertius coin of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, ruler of the Roman Empire, AD 161-180. The back of the coin depicts Virtus, the personification of courage and bravery. This coin was minted in Rome, Italy, AD 179-180.
Obv: Laureate head of Marcus Aurelius, facing right. Obv inscription: [M] AVREL ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXXIIII. Rev: Virtus, in military dress, seated right on a low seat, holding a reversed, vertical spear in the right hand and a parazonium (short dagger) in the extended left hand. Rev inscription: [VIRTVS AVG IMP X COS III PP], SC in field.
