Social History — 19th century; c. 1830-40
Tankard
A conical tankard of pint capacity with an everted rim and decorative fillets around the base. The hollow-cast swept handle has escutcheon and flush attachments and the thumbplate is engraved with the initials ‘T ‘ and ‘R’ [possibly ‘I’ and ‘K’]. The body has a badly rubbed inscription ‘T F Richardson/ Crown & Anchor/ Paul Strt’ within a wriggle-work oval cartouche. There is a crowned WR verification mark below rim to the left of the handle. There is a very faint (almost obliterated) unidentified touch inside the base. Date: c.1830-40.
There was a Crown and Anchor tavern, in Paul Street, Finsbury (see Lillywhite, 1972 – 5559 with references for the years 1826-27.)
