Tankard
A tulip style tankard of pint capacity with a thickened rim, decoratively turned fillet around the lower body and ridged pedestal foot. The hollow-cast ‘broken’ or ‘C-scroll’ handle is attached to the body with struts. The body is engraved with the cypher ‘WSC’ and is inscribed under the base ‘W Church Queens Head Colchester’. Just below the rim to the left and right of the handle are Victorian verification marks, three ‘flower’ hallmarks and a ‘PINT’ label. The faint, circular touch inside the base with the legend [..RADIN…] is the mark of Gerardin & Watson, London, OP1837; a partnership between Francis Gerardin, a pewterer mentioned on his own (OP1836a) between 1805 and 1823, and Watson (no details known) with a starting date of 1824. Francis Gerardin’s address was 21, Poland Street, Westminster, but in c. 1854 the partnership moved to 43, Poland Street. Date: c. 1830-50
