Social History — 1896
Medallion, commemorative medallion
Aluminium token commemorating the appointment of George Faudel Phillips as Lord mayor of the City of London. The reverse of the token is printed with a calendar for 1897. The souvenir was purchased by Ernest King for one penny (1d) from a London street trader on Monday 9th November 1896 five days before the Lord Mayor's Show. Souvenirs commemorating the hugely popular Lord Mayor's show would have been cheaply produced by small London companies such as Grueber and sold by street traders throughout the week before the show that traditionally takes place on the second Saturday in November.
