Coin, radiate
A base silver radiate coin of Saloninus. Saloninus was appointed Caesar (Crown Prince) by his father, the Emperor Gallienus, in AD 258. Saloninus was briefly proclaimed emperor in AD 260 before he was usurped by Postumus and murdered by his supporters. The back of the coin depicts pontifical implements. This coin was minted in Gaul, AD 258-260.
Obv: Draped, radiate bust of Saloninus, facing right. Obv inscription: SALON VALERIANVS CAES. Rev: Sacrificial and priestly objects. Rev inscription: PIETAS AVG. Part of a hoard from Fenchurch Street, City of London, 1926.
