Viscount Rochester's accounts for the maintenance of animals in St James's Park and Gardens, April-June 1611
Menagerie accounts recording payments to gardeners and keepers of fowl in St James' Park, April to June 1611, for feeding the birds and animals in their care. In 1611, Robert Carr was appointed Keeper of the Palace of Westminster. His duties included keeping and preserving ‘wild beasts and fowl’ in St James’s Park and Spring Garden. Eel livers and frogs were fed to the herons. Among the other birds were storks, cranes and guinea fowl. The goats and sheep from Africa and Asia were given apples. 11 shillings was spent on ‘powder and shott, to kill the vermyn in the parke’. Three month's supply of bread and fruit for the 'Indian beasts' cost ten shillings, as did carrots and bread for the beaver.
