Goblet
In 1673, the merchant George Ravenscroft set up a glasshouse at the Savoy Precinct using skilled Italian glassmakers. Problems with the glass ‘crizzling’ or cracking resulted in lead oxide being added to the mix. In 1677, he advertised his new and perfected lead crystal in the London Gazette for the week 5-9 October, 1676 and in May of the following year entered into a new agreement with the Glass Sellers Company. A device was used to distinguish this new glass: 'a Raven's head shall be made or set in all the glasses to distinguish the same from all others.'
This fragment of a goblet retains the lower part of a straight funnel bowl with solid base, a hollow quatrefoil inverted baluster stem and part of the foot. The stem has a circular seal depicting a raven's head (applied upside down).
