Richard III; or St Anthony's pig
Livery badge of Richard, Duke of Gloucester (later King Richard III), in the form of a boar. The boar has a row of bristles along its back and is wearing a collar round its neck. Richard's symbol was a white boar and in 1483, the royal wardrobe accounts show that thousands of boar badges were ordered for use at his coronation in July. When Richard's son Edward was made Prince of Wales in September that year, 130,000 cloth badges were ordered. At the king's coronation, he rode in a procession from the Tower of London to Westminster Abbey and Londoners would have lined the streets to watch. This pewter badge might have been worn by an onlooker. Supporters of the noble families fighting for power during the Wars of the Roses wore badges to show their allegiance.
