Dress, evening dress
Evening dress made by Lilian Lipley. Mrs. Lipley ran a small dressmaking business in Roman Road from 1922 to ca.1934 employing 8-10 local women and making for local clients. It is believed she wore this dress to Masonic functions.
Black artificial chiffon, black machine made lace. Full length evening dress; upper bodice of lace with v-neck; sleeveless; back panel of lace cut in v to 3cm above waist; body of dress to knee level sewn with parallel horizontal tucks; skirt set into body to form deep zigzag line at knee level; fullness added by insertion of godets; waistband at natural waist line; side opening, fastening with press studs.
