Post-Medieval — 16th century
Head of Saint John the Baptist
This Carrara marble head, which was originally painted, was knocked down from a canopy or altar screen and thrown into a pit in Shoreditch. During Mary I's reign, London churches were partly restored to their former glory. Church walls, white-washed a few years earlier, were hastily repainted with biblical scenes, and new sculptures erected.
