Intaglio, military finger-ring
Oval carnelian intaglio insert from a finger-ring, in a cloudy orange depicting an eagle and standards; eagle standing left, looking right, flanked by two legionary standards.
The face of the stone is convex but the base where it would have fitted into the setting of a ring is sloping and angular.
The nature of the subject depicted indicates that the finger-ring may have belonged to an officer in the army. The engraved intaglio was used to mark the sealing on official documents.
