Hat, bowler hat, riding hat
Bowler hat of grey felt trimmed with light grey silk ribbon on brim edge and around base of crown. Two black metal eyelets are positioned on either side of crown and a black cord is attached to the underside of the brim at centre back. A brown leather band is stitched around the interior of the base of the crown.
A black fabric label has been adhered to the inside of the crown and is printed with gold ink. No obvious designer or manufacturer names are present, but the image of a combined royal coat of arms is prominently featured, with the Kingdom of England on the left and the Kingdom of Scotland on the right. A banner rests under the two coat of arms with the following words: 'Dieu Est Non Driot' and 'Nemo Me Impune Lacessit' (both of which translate to: 'Together under one crown').
Upon a close inspection of the hat in the summer of 2014, small white feathers were discovered on the brim. Through the use of a microscope, the feathers can be clearly seen. Although little information is known on the history of this hat, the presence of small white feathers suggests it was worn for hunting.
