Bracelet; choker
Gold oblong and circular link bracelet in form of an armoured collar. Comprising seven rows of massive rectangular links alternating with beads in circular saucer-shaped links. A piece of such a weight must date from after the discovery in California of rich deposits of gold in the mid-19th century. In 1884, with the opening up of the mines in the Transvaal, South Africa became the main source, with seemingly inexhaustible resources. The size of the bracelet would have been balanced by the ornately flounced and decorated dresses of the time.
