Pendant, memorial pendant
Memorial pendant, part of a matching set of jewellery. Four 'arms' of netted hair in the form of a cross are set in gold mounts. To make these ornaments, the hair was woven in a continuous tube, then caught in bead or long oval shapes with the metal mounts. English, c.1850.
Locks of woven hair were incorporated in jewellery as reminders of loved ones or the dead. Mrs. E.M. Salmond donated this jewellery to the Museum in 1938 and it is said to have been made with her grandmother's hair. Matching earrings 38.160/2.
