Social History — 1900-1950
Mangle
This large mangle was used at the public laundry in Abbey Street, Bethnal Green. Bethnal Green Borough Council opened the laundry in 1898. The building also included a public washhouse with a separate entrance in Cheshire Street. The facilities provided local residents who had no running water at homes with a place to bathe and wash their clothes. Machines used in public laundries were often larger, power-driven versions of similar items used in homes.
