Printed Ephemera — 1898-1914
Lux
This advert for Lux soap flakes was issued by Lever Brothers of Port Sunlight, Cheshire between 1898 and 1914. It shows a black woman pouring soap suds over a black child's hair, and carries the slogan 'Lux Won't Shrink Wool'. Lux soap was claimed to be as good at washing clothes as it was for washing hair. By associating the black child's hair with wool, this advertisement reflected the prevailing European idea that the hair of blacks was less appealing than that of non-blacks.
