Bell mortar
This bronze mortar is decorated with the initials ‘MD’ and the date 1656. Small mortars like this were used by apothecaries for making medicines, mixing and diluting powders, making emulsions and shaping pills. Larger mortars were for grinding herbs and drugs in bulk.
