Rocking horse
Wooden rocking horse constructed from deal with a high arched saddle and blocks to support the feet. A pair of wooden pistols in holsters flank the horse's neck. The boarded rocker is decorated with a painted saddle cloth, flowers, two small figures and the outline of the horse's legs. The painted decoration is extremely worn and faded. There are three sets of punched initials 'ED' at the back of the cantle, at the back of the second saddle, and underneath the rockers.
The rocking horse was probably bought in Danzig, Poland, before being brought back to England. A similar horse is shown in ‘Toys of other days’ in a painting by or after Chodowiecki, who was born in Danzig (1726-1801). An identical horse is shown in ‘Der Nurnbergisch Kindlesmarkt’, 1797, by Johann Georg Trautner (1750-1812) now in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg.
