Brass snuff box with inlaid panels of mother-of-pearl. There is an inscription in the middle of the lid: ‘1641 AS’. By 1614 London had 7000 tobacconists’ shops, selling pipe tobacco, snuff (powdered tobacco), pipe tampers and other smoking accessories. A Company of Tobacco Pipe Makers was established in 1619 and in the same year James I ordered all tobacco imports to enter England through London.
