Cromwell Protector medal die
This die was used for casting the obverse of The Lord General Medal, engraved by Thomas Simon. Medals were issued at Oliver Cromwell’s command to commemorate his elevation to the Protectorate on 16 December, 1653. The medal die depicts the bust of Cromwell, three-quarters, facing right, in plain falling collar, armour, and a scarf with a fringe looped on right shoulder; legend: ‘OLIV D G R P ANG SCO ET HIB PRO’. The edge of the die is damaged.
