Spherical pomander
This perforated container was filled with sweet-scented herbs and spices to protect the wearer from foul smells and infection. The term pomander derives from the French 'pomme d'ambre' - an apple-shaped lump of 'ambergris' (a sweet-smelling waxy secretion from the stomach of a whale).
