Post-Medieval — Late15th-16th century
Saucer
A saucer, with a broad rim, shallow well and concave base. The edge of the rim has been reinforced on the underside. The letter ‘I’ (a possible ownership mark) has been struck twice in different positions on the rim and there is a scratched letter ? ‘S’ with other scratched symbols on the back. No other marks. Slices of stale bread ('trenchers') were used as plates, and were often gathered up and distributed to the poor after a feast. By the mid-1500s bread trenchers were replaced with wooden platters and pewter or silver plates.
