James I warming pan lid
The metal pan (now missing) was originally filled with hot coals to warm the bed before retiring at night. For an almost identical pan see British Museum (1878,1101.105) inscribed GOD.SAVE.OVR KINGE.IAMES 1620'. See also, Fig.7b in E.E.Hopwell, Base Thoughts 4 (1992) pp.11-28, information from Malcolm Jones 2017. An article by Beard in Connoisseur January 1933 is the first serious discussion of these warming pans. Malcolm Jones will publish inscriptions on these pieces in the 2018 Journal of the Antique Metalware Society. See also V&A with a crowned lion holding a lance with the banner of St. George, within a ring of small holes, surrounded by the inscription GOD.SAVE.KING.CHARLES.1630 (M.42-1932)
