Whistle
Small whistle or birdcall in the shape of a bird. The tail forms the whistle and the top of the head has a hole for the air to get out. The bird has a green tail, brown wings, yellow head and breast. It was made in the Saintonge region of France. It was used to attract birds for hunting. Small songbirds were often caught in nets and eaten in pies. Whistles of this type were a characteristic French product of the 15th and 16th centuries and a number of Saintonge whistles have been found in London.
