Dish, dripping dish
Reconstructed late medieval Hertfordshire glazed ware dripping dish. The vessel is slab built and is oval with a pinched pouring lips at each end and a straight strap handle attached in the middle of one of the long sides. The dish is glazed inside and has traces of soot on the outside. As the name suggests, it was probably used to catch the juices from a roasting joint to make a gravy or sauce. Such dishes would also have stopped the dripping juices from sizzling in the fire. Excavated at Gateway House, Watling Street EC4 in 1954 (site code GM160, ER161B).
