Part of buckler with an iron boss in the centre, with traces of brazing inside and out. The central spike has a brass button. Around the boss are radiating spokes, linked by a brass ring. There are iron rivets with domed brass heads round the edge of the boss and in the brass ring. Bucklers were used in combat and for martial exercises. They were held in the left hand to parry an opponent's blade. Sword and buckler contests were a popular spectator sport, but could get out of hand with unruly crowds rampaging through the streets carrying 'swerd, bokeler, and dagareis.'
