Post-Medieval — Early 18th century
Tankard fragment
According to Henry A Harben, A Dictionary of London, (London, 1918), Samuel Francome (sic) was the proprietor 'at the sign of hte HOrsehoe in West Harding Street' in 1722. It is possible that Mary Francum was his widow, but the name was popular in the Francome family for several generations. The inscription may refer to the Horse Shoe and Magpie tavern, 20, Fetter Lane, which seems to have been active from 1826-27. (See also, the Magpie and Horse Shoe in Lillywhite, 1972, p, 294 - 9068 with references for the 1860s).
