Post-Medieval — Early 16th century
Portcullis badge
The Hospital of the Savoy on the Strand was founded in 1505 by Henry VII to accommodate 100 poor men every night. The men were first taken to the chapel to pray for the founder and then a bed would be allotted to them. On the coverlet of each bed was embroidered a portcullis, like the one on this badge, and a Tudor rose - emblems of Henry VII. The men were given a bath and their clothes were cleaned. They were allowed to stay only one night unless they were sick, in which case the nurses would care for them.
