Post-Medieval — Early 16th century
St Judas Thaddeus; St Jude
This tile depicting St Jude (known also as Judas Thaddeus) was once part of a ceramic stove that was imported from Germany in the early 1500s. It was probably specially commissioned by one of the wealthy religious houses in London. Many stove tiles were decorated with Biblical scenes and representations of the apostles. These luxury items would have been used almost exclusively by the aristocracy and rich monastic houses. The stoves were probably installed by German craftsmen who accompanied the tiles to England.
