Jew tombs Whitechapel (imprint)
These tomb decorations were drawn from the three Jewish cemeteries then situated on or near Mile End Road. The Brady Street Cemetery for Ashkenazi Jews opened in 1761 and was used as a burial ground for nearly a century. The grave of the financier Nathan Mayer Rothschild is located there. The Old Sephardi Cemetery on the Mile End Road, founded in 1657, is the oldest surviving Jewish cemetery in the country. Jews of Portuguese and Spanish origin were buried in the New Sephardi Cemetery from 1733.
