A dress design for Lady Delamere
Hardy Amies created sketches such as this for a Lady Delamere, who lived in Kenya. If Lady Delamere liked a sketch, then the dress was made up for her to try on when she visited London.
A London-born fashion designer, Amies began designing couture at Lachasse in 1934. He opened his boutique in London's prestigious Savile Row in 1946, first dressing the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947. Amies was made Dressmaker by Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen eight years later.
Amies was renowned for tailored suits and dresses in woollen and tweed fabrics. He also specialised in lavish satin and tulle evening dresses and ball gowns influenced by the Dior 'new look'.
From the 1960s, Amies became better known as a menswear designer. He received numerous fashion awards and is noted for having designed all the costumes for Stanley Kubrick's film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, in 1968.
