Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1953
Blackheath
This view, taken from the artist's window at 42 Dartmouth Row at the top of Blackheath Hill, looks north-east from the Greenwich end of Blackheath. Details of the window frame can be seen in the immediate foreground and Blackheath Church stands in the centre of the painting.
The artist ( 1928-92) evokes the light and landscape of the capital in powerful brush strokes and subdued colours, suited to London's mood on an overcast day. The sky is dramatically rendered in the tradition of the Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh. From 1954 onwards, John Bratby became known as one of the 'Kitchen Sink Painters' for his portrayals of domestic subjects.
