Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1991
The Enchanted Castle
The final image in a series painted by the artist between 1989 and 1991, this painting is a bold representation of a Hackney council tower block at Clapton Park. Its title is an ironic reference to a painting of the same name by Claude Lorraine in the National Gallery. The artist has juxtaposed romanticism with mundane reality. By likening the tower block to a magical castle, the painting serves to emphasise the contrast between the two.
High-rise flats built by local authorities were a new venture during the mid 20th century. As early as the 1960s, however, they were coming under growing criticism from both residents and architects.
