Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1836
Staple Inn and Middle Row
Facade of Staple Inn and Middle Row, High Holborn, c.1840, probably by T H Shepherd. The frontage of Staple Inn, built in 1586, still survives, though the stucco shown here has since been removed to reveal the timber framing. The shops shown are Magasin des Modes; Moon Watch Maker; Tobacconist; Blissetts Juvenile Warehouse. Middle Row (on the right) was demolished in 1867 since it encroached on the thoroughfare and obstructed the flow of traffic. It is shown as tenanted by 'Cornish - Old and New Bookseller & Publisher - Libraries Purchased'. The obelisk topped by a lamp marks the City boundary.
