The Tower of London from the East Side

Exterior view of the Tower of London from the East side, described on an old label as executed 'from a Sketch taken on the Spot by J. Tugman'. The view shows the Tower before the removal of the eighteenth century buildings between the inner and outer curtain walls, which took place over a long period of years subsequent to Salvin's programme of rebuilding and restoration, which started in the 1840s. The Great Storehouse (burnt down in 1842) is at the centre, and to the left of this appear the roofs of two buildings which still stand: the Hospital and the Horse Armoury. The drawing is an unusually good view of the Develin tower (at the extreme left) and of the recently excavated buttresses to the left of the Brass Mount Battery (right).
