Looking down the transept of Crystal Palace
Joseph Paxton's original design for the Crystal Palace was modified to include a transept, roofed by a semi-circular vault, to contain three huge elm trees growing on the site. One of the trees can be seen in this view of the transept, providing a backdrop for the 26-foot high (8m) Crystal Fountain designed by F. & C. Osler of Birmingham. Made from almost four ton(ne)s of glass, the fountain was a popular meeting place for visitors.
