Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1988
Elephant & Castle: High Rise, '88
The subject of this painting is Draper House, the twenty-five-storey tower block (and the tallest block of flats in London at the time of its construction), which can be seen to the left of the composition. There is also a medium-sized block on the far left, Sherston Court, and a single-storey accomodation on the right.
The Draper Estate formed an intrinsic part of the redevelopment of Elephant and Castle during the 1960s. The artist was 'attracted by the red columns that run right up through the building forming a landmark visible for miles around, and by the idea of taking a very wide angle of view and all the distortion that it entails.'
