The Adelphi Wharf
In this view of the Adelphi Wharf , close to the Strand, barges full of coal are being unloaded into carts by coal heavers. In the forground, women and children are scavenging for dropped coal. By 1800 , colliers carrying coal from the north east of England, predominated in the river Thames and by the 1830s, over 8000 colliers entered the port each year, causing major problems for navigation.
