Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1831-1833
Kensal Green Cemetery
The General Cemetery Company was established in 1830 to oversee the construction of Kensal Green Cemetery in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea as a British equivalent of Père Lachaise in Paris. A competition was launched the following year in order to appoint an architect for the project and this watercolour by Thomas Allom may be an illustration of a plan by John William Griffith, who went on to design two chapels and the main gateway for the cemetery. The Grand Union Canal borders the cemetery to the left.
