Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1875
Old Battersea Bridge
This nocturnal view of an arch of Old Battersea Bridge, probably taken from the south-east, is closely related to James McNeill Whistler's well-known painting 'Nocturne in Blue and Gold: Old Battersea Bridge', dated c.1872-5.
Built in 1771-2 after designs by Henry Holland, Battersea Bridge was the first bridge to be erected at Battersea. Prior to its demolition in 1881, the wooden bridge was frequently depicted by artists.
Walter Greaves (1846-1930) has dated his painting 1869 but, as is often the case with his work, the date is not correct: his painting must postdate Whistler's painting and probably the engraving.
