Hyde Park Corner 1918
The painting depicts the popular meeting place Rotten Row beside Hyde Park Corner.
A crowd of promenaders in Rotten Row contains a nurse, soldiers, children and a dog. The presence of the servicemen and nurses reminds the viewer that the First World War was in its fourth year when the artist completed this painting. Part of Apsley House can be seen in the background, along with, from left to right, the bronze quadiga on Constitution Arch, the Hyde Park Corner screen and St. George's Hospital.
Robert Wright Stewart painted several scenes of Hyde Park which he exhibited at the Royal Academy until 1940.
